The current state of the issue.

This is not a newfound issue in a country like India. There are many stories and reports of how the rate of suicides has increased in the recent past. But very few have looked into the matter or question why our youth are taking their lives. According to WHO India has the highest rate of suicides in South-East Asia. The country has the third rank in the female suicide rate according to the reports released in 2019.

The majority of the people throwing away their lives are below the age of 45. From the National, Crime Records Bureau reports in 2018, the people in age groups 15-39 are the most vulnerable group resorting to suicides. In a country where the young generation fills the major part of the population, this is a serious issue.

The cause is not simple to explain.

My one-word answer would be “Society”- you may think that its cliche but its not. Being a lower-middle-class Indian, I am very much aware of the thought of parents like mine. They give so much importance to education sometimes more than the child itself. They want their child to grow up and earn big. The overload of hopes a student carries is humongous.

For some kids, a path was made for them as they grow up. What they should learn, what they must become, is all taken care of by others. But some escape this by the support of people they call family. They get to follow their own ideas and chose their own path.

Some did not taste failure when they were in school. Once they do they cannot cope with the fact that they lost for the first time in their life. They become numb and do not know what to do. It is like they are in an alternate reality where they do not know how to breathe. Some go into depression, anxiety, and loses the grip of their own life.

Life is stressful

You must be thinking that these are the words of someone who suffered the same fate. But this is not only the story of one girl or guy. There are thousands or more who can narrate a similar story. Even the ones who took the same path and succeeded will share a similar experience.

What we need is an environment where kids could express themselves, where they could raise their voices. Education is very important in this world, but it should not turn our life into jail. Elders must give their children a chance to prove themselves. if they fall be there for them. , hear them out, listen to their views, and let them follow their passion than being a robot.

Medicine, Engineering, and Finance are not the only fields of study in this world. Let the student chose if he wants to get into one of those or something different. The stats show the students in prime institutions in India like the IIT’s are also giving up on their lives.

“But what will the society think?”, that single question has ruined more lives than cancer in this country. Thinking different is not a crime, make your parents know what you feel, what makes you happy. For parents, makes sure you are with your child at every point of their life. let them make decisions about their career and life. give them that space and they will be happy for their entire life.
