Twitter is flooding with people sharing gifs of their deceased relatives and loved ones. This includes even the ones that passed a long time ago. From great grandparents to even historical figures can be seen in action.

The online genealogy company MyHeritage has come out with an AI-based service called Deep Nostalgia. All you need to do is upload an image and the AI will produce a gif that smiles, moves eyes, and blinks.
Remember the moving pictures in Harry Potter? If yes then you will get a similar vibe when you see these pictures move. But the movement is limited to the eyes and head moving sideways and an occasional smile at times.

Many have used this technology to bring back their long-lost relatives. On one hand, this is “cool” but according to many seeing your dead relative come “back to life” is nothing short of creepy.

The facial animation is powered by D-ID, an Israeli company that is an expert in facial recognition algorithms.

It is no doubt that Deep Nostalgia has exploded in popularity among netizens. It has become an internet sensation within one week since its release. The company claims that more than 10 million faces have been animated and a few thousand photos are being converted every minute.

Not only images of real people; even forms of art can be brought to life using this well-trained AI. From paintings to even sculptures have been converted by people so far.

Even though free signup is suggested by the website, you can submit your photos without the signup process. The site promises that the photos submitted without signup will be deleted to protect privacy. MyHeritage is not the safest place to give your data to. They suffered a major data breach in 2018, that exposed 92 million emails and hashed passwords.
